Contemporary Art and Multicultural Education
By: Susan Cahan and Zoya Kocur
Contemporary Art and Multicultural Education is Cahan and Kocur’s answer to the boring and culturally lacking classrooms of the American education systems. This article outlines how teachers need to incorporate and emphasize more of a multicultural curriculum, and how this simple change can benefit students in and outside the classroom. Every student needs to be challenged with new concepts and ideas in order for them to grow and think outside the box. A multicultural education exposes students to new ways of seeing the world, instills empathy and a desire for social change. Cahan and Kocur’s article drives home the point that exposure to different cultures doesn’t need to be scary or met with a teacher’s apprehension; it can be a time to learn and grow together by learning about different cultures.
